“While we can never forget it is time to pull ahead. Many more disasters will come our way. Many more times of mourning unfortunately will effect this country.” “…would strike fear into every decent human being.” TEXT AND PHOTO: www.njlawman.com

(USA PATRIOT Act – Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of

Executive Order 13233.

CALEA® | The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (Public Notice on the Common Carrier and Wireless Telecommunication Bureaus Establishes Procedures for Carriers to Submit or Supplement CALEA, Section 107(c) Extension Petitions, Both Generally With Respect to Packet-Mode and Other Safe Harbor Standards): отворете в Word или в Acrobat

Point, Click … Eavesdrop: How the FBI Wiretap Net Operates

By the numbers”.

Marking the Eleventh Anniversary of 9/11

    WHITE HOUSE
    Sept. 11, 2012

Today, President Obama and the First Lady marked the eleventh anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

They began the day at the White House, observing a moment of silence on the South Lawn just after 8:45 a.m., around the time the first plane hit the north tower of the World Trade Center. Afterward, they traveled to the Pentagon, where the President spoke at a memorial service in honor of those who died there, as well as in New York and Pennsylvania.

President Barack Obama, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Gen. Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, stand during the playing of Taps during the September 11th Observance Ceremony at the Pentagon Memorial in Arlington, Va., Sept. 11, 2012.

This anniversary allows us to renew our faith that even the darkest night gives way to a brighter dawn. Today, we can come here to the Pentagon, and touch these names and kneel beside a building where a single stone still bears the scars of that fire. We can visit the field of honor in Pennsylvania and remember the heroes who made it sacred. We can see water cascading into the footprints of the Twin Towers, and gaze up at a new tower rising above the New York skyline.
And even though we may never be able to fully lift the burden carried by those left behind, we know that somewhere, a son is growing up with his father’s eyes, and a daughter has her mother’s laugh — living reminders that those who died are with us still.
So as painful as this day is and always will be, it leaves us with a lesson that no single event can ever destroy who we are. No act of terrorism can ever change what we stand for. Instead, we recommit ourselves to the values that we believe in, holding firmly, without wavering, to the hope that we confess.
That’s the commitment that we reaffirm today. And that’s why, when the history books are written, the true legacy of 9/11 will not be one of fear or hate or division. It will be a safer world; a stronger nation; and a people more united than ever before.
Vice President Biden marked the anniversary by traveling to Shanksville, PA, where he delivered remarks at the Flight 93 National Memorial Commemorative Service to honor the passengers and crew who died there 11 years ago today. The Vice President told the families who lost loved ones that day that the heroism of their husbands, wives, sons, daughters, mothers, and fathers would never be forgotten.

Today we stand on this hallowed ground, a place made sacred by the heroism and sacrifice of the passengers and the crew of Flight 93. And it’s as if the flowers, as I walked here, as if the flowers were giving testament to how sacred this ground is.
My guess — and obviously it’s only a guess; no two losses are the same. But my guess is you’re living this moment that Yeats only wrote about, when he wrote, pray I will and sing I must, but yet I weep. Pray I will, sing I must, but yet I weep.
My personal prayer for all of you is that in every succeeding year, you’re able to sing more than you weep. And may God truly bless you and bless the souls of those 40 incredible people who rest in this ground.

Remembering 9/11 in a Volatile World

    HERITAGE
    Sept.11, 2012

Eleven years ago today, terrorists shattered America’s sense of safety. Generations who did not remember Pearl Harbor suddenly knew the shock of an attack on U.S. soil.

Brothers, fathers, cousins, wives, and daughters were lost. And more sisters, mothers, husbands and sons would give their lives in the years that followed as they fearlessly joined the fight against terrorism around the world.

Because of the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform—and the hours put in scanning intelligence documents and patrolling the streets by our servants here at home—America has thus far avoided another 9/11. Since that day, at least 51 terrorist plots against the country (that we know of) have been foiled. Terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden has been eliminated.

But as the U.S. withdraws from Iraq and Afghanistan, the world is not becoming a safer place.

Pakistan continues to serve as a safe haven for terrorist groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba, the Taliban, and the Haqqani network, threatening to jeopardize everything the U.S. has fought for in Afghanistan since 9/11.

In a new Issue Brief taking stock of the war on terrorism, Heritage security experts Michaela Bendikova, Lisa Curtis, and Jessica Zuckerman warn:
[T]he U.S. counterterrorism strategy remains flawed. The U.S. needs to name its enemies, maintain the nation’s commitments abroad, fully fund the military, reach out to allies, and truly defend the home front.

The campaign has certainly seen its share of successes in addition to the bin Laden mission. Drone strikes have helped to disrupt al-Qaeda operations and planning. But the U.S. must concentrate simultaneously on “uprooting extremist ideologies that support terrorism, collecting information from captured terrorists, and convincing the Pakistanis to conduct joint operations that deal with the threat,” the authors write. Continued terrorist sanctuaries inside Pakistan’s borders remain a threat.

At home, we cannot combat terrorism under “a law enforcement paradigm that focuses on reactive policies and prosecuting terrorists rather than proactive efforts to enhance intelligence tools and thwart terrorist attempts long before the public is in danger,” they write. This strategy fails to recognize the true nature of the threat posed by terrorist groups (such as al-Qaeda and al-Shabaab) and state-sponsored terrorism, while thwarting terrorist travel and financing remain the most effective ways to protect the homeland.

Unfortunately, the reality is that terrorism—without the face of a particular nation—is not the only threat America faces. Iran and North Korea continue to invest in capabilities designed to kill Americans and our allies. Syria is wracked by civil war and has the potential to destabilize the entire Middle East.

If we are to meet this volatile world with a determination to protect U.S. citizens, our priorities must shift. The defense budget has already absorbed about half of all spending cuts even though it represents less than a fifth of the federal budget. If U.S. forces are weakened further, the country will be unable to maintain its superpower status.

Today, we remember those we have lost. Tomorrow, we must honor their memory by strengthening our defenses for those who do not yet know the horror of an attack at home—so that they never will.

What I learned 11 years ago today … Nobody answered — we were all too busy rushing toward our jobs

by Nilus Mattive, Money and Markets
    Tuesday, September 11, 2012

Exactly 11 years ago today, right about the time this column is getting e-mailed out to you, I was walking through Hoboken, New Jersey toward the train that would take me into lower Manhattan.

The sky was clear blue, and as I grabbed my coffee from the usual spot, I couldn’t help noticing that I was running late.

After a short ride under the Hudson River, our train arrived several stories below the World Trade Center right around 8:45. As the doors opened there was the unmistakable smell of something burning.

“Is a trash can on fire?” asked the conductor. Nobody answered — we were all too busy rushing toward our jobs.

IMF Director Warns: Fiscal Cliff Is DEADLY!
    What to Do …

While Christine Lagarde tells world leaders that America’s Fiscal Cliff is one of the deadliest risks now looming over the global economy … Senate majority leader Harry Reid continues stubbornly REFUSING to even allow the Senate to vote on a plan to delay it!

THE MORAL OF THE STORY: Waiting for our leaders to save you from this impending catastrophe could be extremely costly. It’s time to take your financial security into your own hands!

But as I ascended the first flights of stairs, the smell grew stronger and a gaggle of policemen were coming down the steps past me. That was my first indication that it was something more than a burning trash can.

My second clue came once I reached the ground floor of the building. People were moving faster than normal. Bagels and napkins were strewn about … maybe a broken high heel or two.

“You will not panic,” I told myself. “There’s no point in running or acting irrationally. That’s how people get hurt. Instead, you’ll just go out the side door like you always do.” And I did.

Once on the street, I walked in the shadow of the building and crossed Broadway like always. From Zuccotti Park, I looked back up toward the tower. Smoke was billowing out of a hole way up at the top. Shards of glass, papers, and all types of assorted office debris were raining down.

Still, the sheer size of the building dwarfed the extent of the damage. I knew there was no point in standing there any longer. Lollygagging wouldn’t do anyone else any good. Besides, I was a driven New Yorker that had a Wall Street job to get to.

How a retired nurse and waiter recovered from the stock market crash and now collect $17,000 a year in dividends … These people are now taking luxury vacations, buying new cars, and enjoying their lives in ways they never dreamed possible …

As I walked down Broad Street, I continued to step over papers marked “confidential” and other items not normally lying on the sidewalk. But I was still assuming it was a smaller explosion of some type. Maybe a disgruntled day trader blew himself up. Or maybe it was another minor attack like the one in the 1990s.

Then, just as I got in front of the NYSE Stock Exchange building, I heard an explosion.

“Another plane just hit the World Trade Center,” shouted a trader.

Another. That word surprised me. What did it mean? Had a plane previously hit the building?

Still not grasping what was happening — or perhaps in shock — I told myself it must have been a small rescue plane, maybe a firefighting helicopter trying to take care of the explosion.

The sheer magnitude of the event only hit me once I reached my office building. As I neared the front door, I saw most of my coworkers — the people who actually made it in before 9 o’clock — pouring out.

One grabbed me and said we were under attack. That there were more planes on the way. That they were bombing us or something. It just didn’t make any sense at all.

“We have to get out of here,” he said. “We need to get on the nearest train right now.” So we boarded the N/R line one block away. As it headed uptown, we stopped at the Cortlandt Street station, right across from the World Trade Center. A crowd was getting on, visibly shaken. I tried to tune out their stories of people jumping and other atrocities.

We got off at 14th Street and started walking across town, hoping that the train to New Jersey would still be open. When we got there it was … and a minute later we were passing back under the Hudson.

At this point, I’m guessing less than 30 minutes had elapsed since I first entered Manhattan. And I’m fairly confident that was one of the last trains out of the city before everything completely shut down.

Back in Hoboken I left the station and walked over to Frank Sinatra Park, with its expansive views of lower Manhattan.

People were gathered in groups staring across the water. Construction workers were perched up in the metal skeleton of a building behind the park. The blue sky was now streaked with black clouds billowing from the towers.

We stood there looking. Nobody was really saying anything. And then the entire building collapsed right before our eyes.

I could go on from here — about having had just signed a lease for an apartment two blocks from the Trade Center … about moving into the neighborhood on September 20 … and about all those days and nights working and sleeping in a dust mask. But I’ve probably already said more about my personal experience than I needed to.

The bottom line is that I can’t help myself from recounting this event from time to time. That’s partly because it’s therapeutic, but more importantly because I think it can be instructive to all of us — investors or not.

What did I personally learn from my experience 11 years ago today?

First, that so-called “black swan” events DO happen … even on Tuesdays when the air is dry and the sky is clear.

Second, it pays to have a basic plan in place for catastrophic events.

Third, the most important things in the world are spending quality time with loved ones and pursuing your passions both personally and professionally each and every day.

In the time since, I have also learned that it IS possible to overcome even the most horrific events that take place in the world.

I say that because Lower Manhattan is more vibrant today than it ever has been. A beautiful memorial has replaced the destruction. And that Cortlandt St. subway station — which was badly damaged in the attack and closed for years — is now busily shuffling thousands of people through its turnstiles every day again.

    Saving the American Dream
    FISCAL CLIFF
Charles Goyette | Money and Markets
    Monday, September 10, 2012

So the question is: How do we avoid falling off the fiscal cliff?

How do we AVOID a future in which the American Dream has been utterly obliterated …

In which our children do not have an opportunity for a better life …

In which our futures are not secure …

In which paying our medical bills is an all-consuming challenge …

And in which employment and retirement are uncertain?

How do we increase prosperity in the United States of America?

Due to the pressing nature of the monumental “fiscal cliff” America is now facing,
Dr. Weiss has asked Charles Goyette — an investment professional with 20 years’ experience, author of Red and Blue and Broke All Over: Restoring America’s Free Economy, and our resident authority on this great crisis — to address it for you today. — The Money and Markets team
There is little doubt that the massive fiscal cliff we are now approaching threatens to cripple the U.S. economy and stock market and to drive gold and silver prices into the stratosphere.

It is, quite simply, the single greatest challenge the American Dream has ever faced. And it now threatens to destroy that dream for generations.

Make no mistake: This crisis is the natural, inevitable consequence of the obscene orgy of reckless spending our leaders have engaged in for decades.

This great fiscal cliff was constructed entirely by Washington. It was created in Congress and in the White House … by both major political parties … and with the undying support of the Federal Reserve.

Congress and the White House have been able to fight wars … grant massive subsidies to businesses in return for huge campaign contributions … and create massive give-away programs and other vote-buying schemes — all without having to raise politically unpopular taxes …

Simply because they knew the Fed would pick up the slack and print all the money needed to monetize the outrageous amounts of debt they were incurring.

Also thanks to the Fed, our leaders were able to force the American people — good folks who have largely been responsible with their own money — to bail out investment bankers and other billionaires who drove the economy into the ditch.

How Will You Pay YOUR $2.8 Million Debt?

Not only is this crisis real … not only has it been engineered by our leaders … it is far larger and far more terrifying than any politician, pundit or media outlet has even begun to report.

Last week, for instance, even as the Democratic National Convention convened, America’s official national debt soared past the $16 trillion mark.

I say “official” debt because even this enormous number represents only a tiny fraction of our nation’s actual indebtedness.

According to Laurence Kotlikoff, a senior economist with Reagan’s council of Economic Advisors, Washington’s total debts and obligations are now $222 trillion; more than $2.8 million for every family of four in the nation.

And that means the price you pay for Washington’s financial blundering is about to explode.

Taxes as Far as the Eye Can See …

The plain truth is that every dollar our leaders spend — whether on current expenses or to service its gargantuan debt — has to come from somewhere.

Some of those dollars are collected through direct taxation on companies, wage-earners and investors.

More are borrowed by the U.S. Treasury.

And still more are printed — created out of thin air — by the Federal Reserve.

But in truth, these are all forms of taxation. They’re all burdens on a productive economy:

Taxes on your income confiscates your money before you see it.

Taxes on the companies that produce and sell the products you buy are passed on to you in the price of those products.

When the U.S. Treasury borrows money, it raises the price you have to pay when you purchase a new car or home.

And when the Fed kicks the money-printing presses into overdrive, it imposes yet another tax on you — perhaps the most insidious of all.

A Tax By Any Other Name …

It doesn’t matter what you call it — deficit accommodation, liquidity operations, debt monetization or quantitative easing — at bottom, it’s a tax.

Because when the state prints money to spend on wars, vote-buying schemes or any other government program, it means that every other dollar in existence — every dollar YOU earn, save and invest — loses value.

When the Fed prints money, it is, in effect, taxing every dollar you have and every dollar you will ever have — all under the guise of economic “stimulus.”

Worse, this “stimulus” has little if any real positive impact on the economy. For example, consider the latest round of bailouts for billionaire bankers that the European Central Bank announced last week.

Despite what some in the media claim, this new bailout — a veritable “soup kitchen” for failed banks — is NOT the solution to Europe’s woes.

It is simply more of the same ineffective economic tinkering that the European Central Bank has engaged in for the past four years:

A futile act of desperation that can only prolong the agony, impoverish the European people and dig a deeper grave for the EU.

Because in the end, the bill for these rich-man’s bailouts is ultimately presented to the people. In Europe as in the U.S., a tax by any other name is still a tax.

Whether collected by the IRS, engineered by the U.S. Treasury, or imposed by the Fed, all of these taxes are burdens on YOU; on your ability to provide for your family … to save … and to invest for a more secure future.

If You’re Waiting for Either Political Party
to Save Us from This Looming Crisis,
You’re Likely to Be Woefully Disappointed

I may be treading on dangerous ground here — with the elections only a few weeks away, political fever is high — but the simple truth is that BOTH parties engineered this crisis. And there is little reason to believe that either party has the political will to save us from it.

We have allowed politicians on both sides of the aisle to tinker with the types of taxation, instead of focusing on the total amount of taxation. We have empowered them to use tax laws to manage our affairs, to decide things for us that we should be deciding for ourselves. In short, to socially engineer our lives.

We allow them to use tax laws to provide favors to supporters, to burden their opponents, to enrich their cronies. And all this taxation effectively takes money out of our pockets and puts it into others’ pockets.

It’s a transfer of wealth, not an increase in wealth. It’s a zero sum game.

Now, the Obama administration has explicitly called for an increase in taxes on the wealthy. That plan is more about politics than economics, but unfortunately, it’s bad politics AND bad economics.

If Obama succeeds in raising taxes on the top two percent of taxpayers, it would generate enough income to run the government for about eight days.

And while it would do virtually nothing to reduce the deficit, it would likely do enormous damage to the economy.

Namely, it would confiscate enormous amounts of money from small business owners — the very people who are most needed to help end America’s unemployment nightmare.

Meanwhile, Romney proposes cutting tax rates, and says he would offset those cuts by closing tax loopholes. But he doesn’t say which loopholes he’ll close. Would he eliminate the mortgage interest deduction? The write-off for charitable deductions?

In other words, Romney wants to cut income taxes for some, while imposing other forms of taxes. The result would be a continued increase in the amount of government spending.

Even Paul Ryan’s budget, which has been hailed as a model of fiscal restraint, raises spending as well. And as we know, rising spending means rising taxes in one form or another.
How to Save the American Dream

So the question is: How do we avoid falling off the fiscal cliff?

How do we AVOID a future in which the American Dream has been utterly obliterated …

In which our children do not have an opportunity for a better life …

In which our futures are not secure …

In which paying our medical bills is an all-consuming challenge …

And in which employment and retirement are uncertain?

How do we increase prosperity in the United States of America?

The answer is not letting taxes increase on January 1, 2013.

Nor is it the spending cuts mandated by the Budget Control Act. While they ARE large enough to cripple the dependent U.S. economy and addicted stock market in 2013 and beyond, they do not even begin to solve the larger problem.

The way for our nation to become wealthier and more prosperous, and avoid tumbling off the fiscal cliff and into the abyss, is not the transfer of wealth.

It must be an INCREASE in wealth, which can only be accomplished by eliminating the enormous drag of Washington on the economy.

The only thing that is proven to create wealth is production. Without production, there can be no prosperity.

But production has been burdened with taxes — not just the types of taxes that would increase further if we fall off the fiscal cliff, but also taxes in the form of government spending.

Make no mistake: Government spending and taxes will continue to increase under President Obama, and they will also increase under President Romney.

It is only by dramatically reducing the negative impact of the government spending, regulation and taxes on the economy and by promoting production that we can become prosperous again, and restore the American Dream.

    Yours for wealth and liberty,

    Charles Goyette

U.S. ambassador to Libya killed in Benghazi protests
    on Sept. 11, 2012

Egyptian protesters, angry over what they called an anti-Muslim video, scaled the outer wall of the fortress-like U.S. Embassy in Cairo on Tuesday and took down an American flag

President Obama condemned the “outrageous attack” by a mob on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi that killed the U.S, ambassador to Libya and three other Americans He called the violence — reportedly sparked by an American-made film that protesters said mocked the prophet Muhammad — as “senseless.”
The film, clips of which were disseminated by fringe Florida pastor Terry Jones, has already prompted deadly violence in Libya, where the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed

    Los Angeles Times | September 12, 2012
Libya’s Deputy Prime Minister Mustafa Abu Shagur said the U.S. ambassador to the country, Christopher Stevens, was killed during an attack on the consulate in Benghazi yesterday.

“I condemn the cowardly and criminal act that the U.S. consulate in Benghazi was subjected to and the killing of the ambassador and his companions,” Abu Shagur said on his Twitter account.

The death of the ambassador was reported by Sky News Arabia, citing unidentified people. The channel said three other people were killed. The State Department confirmed a diplomat’s death without identifying the victim.

The mob sacked the U.S. Consulate in the eastern city of Benghazi on Tuesday, killing Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three U.S. government employees. The attack came hours after a demonstration in Cairo, where protesters scaled the wall of the U.S. Embassy and pulled down the American flag in anger over the video, produced in the United States, which protesters said mocked the prophet Muhammad.

More than a dozen Egyptian protesters, angry over what they called an anti-Muslim video, scaled the outer wall of the fortress-like U.S. Embassy in Cairo on Tuesday and took down an American flag.

In its place, they raised a black flag that read: “There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his prophet” before Egyptian security forces sought to tame the crowd.

As night fell, protesters continued to gather outside the embassy in one of the biggest demonstrations there since the fall of Hosni Mubarak’s regime early last year. Security forces surrounded the compound to prevent protesters from again storming the facility, though some demonstrators remained on the wall, waving the black flag.

The protesters in Benghazi set fire to the consulate and fired guns into the air in protest over the film, according to Reuters reporters on the scene. Looters reportedly grabbed desks, chairs and even washing machines from the empty compound.

A White House official said national security advisor Tom Donilon first briefed the president on the violence in Benghazi on Tuesday afternoon, at the top of a weekly meeting with the Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey.

The president was updated throughout the evening, and notified late Tuesday that Stevens was unaccounted for. Obama learned Wednesday that Stevens was confirmed dead Wednesday morning, the official said.

President Obama condemned the “outrageous attack” by a mob on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi that killed the U.S, ambassador to Libya and three other Americans

In a statement released early Wednesday, Obama praised the service of Ambassador Christopher Stevens as “courageous and exemplary.”
He called the violence — reportedly sparked by an American-made film that protesters said mocked the prophet Muhammad — as “senseless.”/see full text below/

Senior officials in Libya on Wednesday condemned the killing of the U.S. ambassador to the country and three other Americans by armed protesters in a furor over an anti-Muslim video. “This is a criminal act that will not go unpunished. This is part of a series of cowardice acts by supporters of the former regime who want to undermine Libya’s revolution,” Prime Minister Abdurrahim Keib told reporters. Keib said the details of the attack were under investigation.

Libyan President Mohamed Magariaf apologized for the deaths and vowed that justice would be served.
“We refuse that our nation’s lands be used for cowardice and revengeful acts. It is not a victory for God’s Sharia or his prophet for such disgusting acts to take place,” Magariaf said. “We apologize to the United States, the people of America, and the entire world. We and the American government are standing on the same side, we stand on the same side against outlaws.”

Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai on Wednesday condemned an American-made film that mocks Islam, galvanizing fears among Westerners that the Afghan leader’s denunciation could be read as a go-ahead to stage violent protests.

The film, clips of which were disseminated by fringe Florida pastor Terry Jones, has already prompted deadly violence in Libya, where the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed in an attack on the consulate in Benghazi on Tuesday. The U.S. Embassy in Cairo also came under assault.

As many as 2,000 demonstrators had rallied outside the embassy earlier in the day to protest video footage posted on YouTube that demonstrators said had been made by Egyptian Coptic immigrants in the United States.

A segment of the low-budget video refers to Muhammad and his followers as “child lovers.” In one part of the preview, the actor portraying the Islamic prophet tells his followers to take children through their battles for their pleasure. It also shows the prophet speaking to a Muslim donkey, asking him if he loves women.

Before the rally, the private Al Nas television channel, run by Salafists, played some of the video posted on YouTube, which a host and a commentator said insulted Islam. The video shown on the channel refers to Muhammad and his followers as “child lovers.” It also shows the prophet speaking to a supposed Muslim donkey, asking him whether he loves women.

The channel’s enraged host and a commentator then demanded to know how Islam could be treated in such a debasing way.

The video has been promoted online by Florida preacher Terry Jones, whose 2011 burning of a Koran triggered riots in Afghanistan. In a statement, Jones called the assault on the embassy in Egypt proof that Muslims “have no tolerance for anything outside of Muhammad.”

Karzai’s public stance toward the NATO force and his U.S. patrons has been somewhat hostile of late. He issued a strident statement accusing the United States of disregarding Afghan sovereignty after American authorities retained some Taliban and other insurgent suspects when handing the country’s main military detention facility over to Afghan control. And the Afghan leader commemorated Tuesday’s anniversary of the 9/11 attacks by criticizing the West’s conduct of the war in Afghanistan.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Tuesday that the breach of the embassy wall “came up pretty quickly” and involved a “relatively modest group of people, but caught probably us and the Egyptian security outside by some surprise.” She said that while “protest is possible in the new Egypt,” the action didn’t signal a new anti-Americanism by the public or government of Egypt.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton also issued a statement, saying she had called Libyan leader Mohamed Magariaf to coordinate increased security. /see full text below/

“Some have sought to justify this vicious behavior as a response to inflammatory material posted on the Internet. The United States deplores any intentional effort to denigrate the religious beliefs of others,” she said. “Our commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation. But let me be clear: There is never any justification for violent acts of this kind.”

The killing of Stevens and the other U.S. personnel is a severe test to the relationship between Libya and the West after an air campaign by the United States and its NATO allies helped Libya’s current leadership topple Moammar Kadafi’s regime in 2011. Even as NATO aircraft targeted Kadafi’s military forces, concerns were raised regarding the radical Muslim element hidden in Libyans’ revolt against the longtime strongman.

President Obama on the Attack in Benghazi

    12 September 2012
    THE WHITE HOUSE
    September 12, 2012

Statement by the President on the Attack in Benghazi
I strongly condemn the outrageous attack on our diplomatic facility in Benghazi, which took the lives of four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens. Right now, the American people have the families of those we lost in our thoughts and prayers. They exemplified America’s commitment to freedom, justice, and partnership with nations and people around the globe, and stand in stark contrast to those who callously took their lives.
I have directed my Administration to provide all necessary resources to support the security of our personnel in Libya, and to increase security at our diplomatic posts around the globe. While the United States rejects efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others, we must all unequivocally oppose the kind of senseless violence that took the lives of these public servants.
On a personal note, Chris was a courageous and exemplary representative of the United States. Throughout the Libyan revolution, he selflessly served our country and the Libyan people at our mission in Benghazi. As Ambassador in Tripoli, he has supported Libya’s transition to democracy. His legacy will endure wherever human beings reach for liberty and justice. I am profoundly grateful for his service to my Administration, and deeply saddened by this loss.
The brave Americans we lost represent the extraordinary service and sacrifices that our civilians make every day around the globe. As we stand united with their families, let us now redouble our own efforts to carry their work forward.

Statement on the Death of American Personnel in Benghazi, Libya

    September 12, 2012

It is with profound sadness that I share the news of the death of four American personnel in Benghazi, Libya yesterday. Among them were United States Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and Foreign Service Information Management Officer, Sean Smith. We are still making next of kin notifications for the other two individuals. Our hearts go out to all their families and colleagues.

A 21 year veteran of the Foreign Service, Ambassador Stevens died last night from injuries he sustained in the attack on our office in Benghazi.

I had the privilege of swearing in Chris for his post in Libya only a few months ago. He spoke eloquently about his passion for service, for diplomacy and for the Libyan people. This assignment was only the latest in his more than two decades of dedication to advancing closer ties with the people of the Middle East and North Africa which began as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Morocco. As the conflict in Libya unfolded, Chris was one of the first Americans on the ground in Benghazi. He risked his own life to lend the Libyan people a helping hand to build the foundation for a new, free nation. He spent every day since helping to finish the work that he started. Chris was committed to advancing America’s values and interests, even when that meant putting himself in danger.

Sean Smith was a husband and a father of two, who joined the Department ten years ago. Like Chris, Sean was one of our best. Prior to arriving in Benghazi, he served in Baghdad, Pretoria, Montreal, and most recently The Hague.

All the Americans we lost in yesterday’s attacks made the ultimate sacrifice. We condemn this vicious and violent attack that took their lives, which they had committed to helping the Libyan people reach for a better future.

America’s diplomats and development experts stand on the front lines every day for our country. We are honored by the service of each and every one of them.

America’s Debt to Its Diplomatic, Military, and Intelligence Personnel

The deaths in Benghazi, Libya, of the U.S. Ambassador to Libya and others in the service of the United States provides a tragic reminder of the great sacrifices that U.S. diplomatic, military, and intelligence personnel serving abroad make to defend America and its interests around the globe

The deaths in Benghazi, Libya, of the U.S. Ambassador to Libya and others in the service of the United States provides a tragic reminder of the great sacrifices that U.S. diplomatic, military, and intelligence personnel serving abroad make to defend America and its interests around the globe.

In a dangerous world, and especially in the dangerous areas of the Middle East and North Africa, American citizens who volunteer to serve in America’s foreign policy agencies and in the U.S. armed forces face risks both from public disorder and intentional attacks by terrorists. Those Americans put their lives on the line to protect their fellow Americans and advance the principles of freedom, opportunity, and free enterprise that America champions in the world.

No grenade blasts, no bomb explosions, and no rain of bullets will stop those in America’s diplomatic, military, and intelligence service from accomplishing their missions. Their continuing dedication to service reflects the greatness of America and the dedication of the American people to proceed, as Abraham Lincoln said, “with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the fallen and with those on the front lines around the world in our diplomatic facilities, military units, and intelligence elements. May God bless all those who serve our country abroad, and may God bless our country’s leaders as they work to protect them in these days of danger.
