Bulgaria (681 AD) is a country located in Southeastern Europe. It is bordered by Romania to the north, Serbia and Macedonia to the west, Greece and Turkey to the south and the Black Sea to the east. Prehistoric cultures began developing on Bulgarian lands during the Neolithic period. Its ancient history saw the presence of the Thracians, and later the Greeks and Romans. The emergence of a unified Bulgarian state dates back to the establishment of the First Bulgarian Empire in 681 AD. Bulgarian was the first “Slavic” language attested in writing. In 886 AD, the Bulgarian Empire introduced the Glagolitic alphabet which was devised by the Saints Cyril and Methodius in the 850s. The Glagolitic alphabet was gradually superseded in later centuries by the Cyrillic script, developed around the Preslav Literary School, Bulgaria in the beginning of the 10th century. Cyrillic is one of the most used writing systems in the world. The Cyrillic alphabet has been adapted to write over 50 different languages, mainly in Russia, Central Asia and Eastern Europe. In many cases additional letters are used, some of which are adaptations of standard Cyrillic letters.
Serbia uses both Cyrillic and Latin alphabets. Bulgarian is a member of the Southern branch of the Slavic language family. Bulgarian (9th to 11th century, also referred to as Old Church Slavonic) – a literary norm of the early southern dialect of the Common Slavic language from which Bulgarian evolved. It was used by Saints Cyril and Methodius and their disciples to translate the Bible and other liturgical literature from Greek into Slavic. Most letters in the Bulgarian alphabet stand for just one specific sound. There are various systems for Romanization of Cyrillic text, including transliteration to convey Cyrillic spelling in Latin letters, and transcription to convey pronunciation.

Bulgarian was the first “Slavic” language attested in writing – alphabet – 850-866 AD.

In the midst of 9 c AD, two brothers – Cyril and Methodius created an alphabet for the Bulgarian (Slavic) language and translated the liturgical books, who were accepted by the state power and personally by Boris I of Bulgaria (852-889). Boris I ruled a country that had already been established on location where the future belongs to the “Family of Christian countries”.

Cyrillic is one of the most used writing systems in the world. The Cyrillic alphabet has been adapted to write over 50 different languages, mainly in Russia, Central Asia and Eastern Europe. The Bulgarian priests succeed to establish it in 10 c in Russia and Serbia. After 988, when Kiev Russia also took up Christianity, Cyrillic becomes the first Russian alphabet. At the end of the 18th century the Russian version of Cyrillic or the “civil script” of Peter the Great (1672-1725) was adapted to write Bulgarian.

In many cases additional letters are used, some of which are adaptations of standard Cyrillic letters and using the same roots of the words.

Traditional Bulgarian culture contains mainly Thracian, Slavic and Bulgar heritage, along with Greek, Roman, Ottoman, Persian and Celtic influences. Nine historical and natural objects have been inscribed in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Madara Rider, the Thracian tombs in Sveshtari and Kazanlak, the Boyana Church, the Rila Monastery, the Rock-hewn Churches of Ivanovo, Pirin National Park, Sreburna Nature Reserve and the ancient city of Nesebar. Along with traditional culture, much heritage from other civilisations has been accumulated since Antiquity. Local researchers claim that the number of archaeological sites is the third-largest in Europe after Italy and Greece. The first book written in a Germanic language—the 4th century Wulfila Bible, was created in Nicopolis ad Istrum in a small Gothic community in present-day northern Bulgaria. The first Christian monastery in Europe was established around the same time. Plovdiv is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities, and the oldest golden treasure in the world, consisting of coins, weapons and jewellery dating to 4,600 BC, was discovered near Varna in 1972. The site revealed evidence of the first European civilization. Sofia is the capital and largest city of Bulgaria.Sofia's history spans 2,400 years. Its ancient name Serdica derives from the local Celtic tribe of the serdi who established the town in the 5th century BC.The Sofia's name is pronounced by Bulgarians with a stress on the 'o', in contrast with the tendency of foreigners to place the stress on 'i'.

Romance and Love – Любов и Романтика – Lyubov i Romantika

It’s very easy to fall in love in Bulgaria, both with the country, the way of life and the people - especially the people! Many single expats of all ages move here and unexpectedly find a partner to share their experiences with and despite the language barrier it is often easier to meet someone on Bulgarian soil than it is on your native territory.
